This historic site representing the Old Stone Age was first
known as attention-getting historic site all over the world since
BoWen, G (Majored in archeology), United Armed Force in Korea
who came to Hantangang Amusement Park in April 1978 found 4 pieces
of stonewares on the surface of the area by change and notifying
to Professor Wonryong Gim of Seoul National University.
This site is distributed on the basalt ground running around
Hantangang in the south of Jeongok City and geological base was
made of gneiss and granite, a kind of metamorphic rock that formed
at pre-Cambrian and lavas ejected at Cheolwon and Pyeonggang
before and after 600,000 years and 300,000 years at the 4th Cenozoic
ear forms two Jeongok basalt layer on the bed rock and the area
is made of bed rock composed of sedimentary rock layer and psammite
rock layer.
Chronicle of Jeongok historic site known by several academic
excavation and scientific method is estimated as the formative
years between about 180,000~210,000 years before connected to
red terrace of earth of Chinese and the formative years about
45000 years before acquired by of sedimentary rock layer.
The stonewares of type found in Jeongok-ri are the evidences
being opposed to Mobius theory that divided culture of the Old
Stone Age into East Asia and Africa&Europe by existence of
such stonewares up to late 1970s and presented new aspect on
the understanding about cultural development process of ancient
human races in world academic circles of the Old Stone Age. It
also brought attempts in new angle on artistic works of Old Stone
Age in East Asia and it became affluent and epoch making material
for understanding on artistic work of pre Old Stone Age in Korean
peninsula as well as providing important material in studying
inhabitation aspect of ancient human races during the central
diluvial epoch.
With excavation of Jeongok-ri, geological study in the 4th age
on Hantangang and Imjingang area has performed and it contributes
greatly to development of methodology on study of Old Stone Age
as consideration on formation process of historic site was increased.
