About Cultural Properties
Bal Jung(1553(8 th year of Myeongjong)~1592(25 th year of Sunjo)) is a military
general in mid Chosun era. He was born in Baeksuk-li. His formal name is Jago,
pen name is Baekun, and his family origin is Gyeongju. He was a son of Myeongsun,
a governor.
He passed military exam in the 12 th year of Sunjo and became a military commander,
and later served in local governor of Haenam, local minister of Geoje, governor
of Ouiwon, and vice-president of military academy, and also served in military
commander in Busan encampment.
First group of 18000 Japanese invaders, led by general Gonishi, attacked Busan
encampment, the major marine gateway of Gyeonsang-do, on Apr. 13, 1592.
This war in Busan encampment was the first battle between Chosun and Japan
in the Japanese invasion in 1592. Although more than 1000 citizens and soldiers
fought to the last, the castle was overthrown and general Jung died for his
chastity.
After the battle, since the dead body of the general was nowhere to be found,
only general¡¯s articles were collected for a funeral. He received posthumous
conferment of honors in minister.
His poet¡¯s name is Choongjang, and served in religious rite.
His tomb was combined with the one of his wife, Lady Im of Cheongpoong. There
are table stone, incense burner stone, stone of soldiers, and stone posts around
their tombs. Writing of the tombstone was made by Shiyeol Song, but it was
lost. The new one was built in 1982.
