State of cultural properties
State of the cultural property Horogoru is located in an important corner to
connect Gaesung and Seoul, formed on a basalt cliff generated by branch stream
of Imjin river. There are two theories of the origin of the name. One is
that it was called Horogoru because of the shape of the area, which looks
like a gourd, and the other is that the name is a combination of two words,
which are ¡®horo¡¯, indicate ¡®a village¡¯, and ¡®goru¡¯, indicate ¡®a castle¡¯.
Among Goguryo remains researched in Gyeonggi-do area, it is
one of the 3 major castles within the area along with Dangpo
and Eundae-li castles. The east wall of Horogoru was formed by
blocking the east part of the basalt land, in which the highest
peak reaches 10m, from where you can see beautiful scenery of
Imjin river as well as adjacent area.
The primary excavation on Horogoru was conducted in Nov., 2000~May,
2002, in which the art of fortification and structure of the
wall were examined. The entire girth of the wall is 401m. The
south wall is 1629m, the north wall is 146m, and the east wall
is 93,1m. The dimension of interior is 606§³, and it is located
on a basalt cliff of approx. 28m high. The east wall was built
by piling stones on the base of soil ground hardened multiple
times, which exhibits the art of fortification in which advantages
of stone and mud castles are effectively combined
