Dangpo castle is a stone castle built between divided Danggae river flowing into Dangpo ferry and main stream of Imjin river by blocking the eastern entrance of the ground on triangular cliff. It is a castle on the ground on cliff nearby river, which is only found in Imjin river, and north of Hantan river in Yeoncheon-gun. This is assumed the first castle that was built for Goguryo to defend from Baekjae or Shilla in the south of Imjin river, and an outpost that was rebuilt after Shilla¡¯s occupation to defend from northen enemies.

The characteristics of the castle are the facts that the wall is high with 3 or 4 folds, there is a river 6 m wide and 3 m deep around the exterior of the castle, there are traces of so-called ¡®pillars with holes¡¯ in the upper part of the wall, there are vertical holes with consistent distance on the wall, and firm stones carved in round shape are connected to their ends. The castle is 450 m wide, and 200 m long from west to east wall. The east wall remained to this day is 6m high and located in a very good spot to look over Imjin river and the area.

Primary excavation of Dangpo castle was done in Oct 2002~ May 2003, which found that the castle was built by piling stones on soil ground hardened multiple times as done in Horogoru, and its supporting wall was built high. Such points are similar to the art of fortification of Goguryo, and are considered very valuable resources to research on Goguryo castles in South Korea.
