About Cultural Properties
This is a graveyard of Mok Hur(1595~1682), a great scholar in the mid Chosun
Dynasty.
Formal names of Mok Hur were Munbo and Hwabo, his pen name is Misu, and his family
origin is Yangcheon. He was born a son of Gyo Hur, a local governor of Yeoncheon,
in 1595. He was educated by Euonwoong Jung in 1615(7 th year of Gwanghaegun).
In 1617, when his father was appointed as governor of Geochang, he followed his
father and went to Oui Mun to learn from him.
In 1624(2 nd year of King Injo), he lived in Uchon in Gwangju, dedicate his life
to reading and calligraphy to complete his unique book.
As it was indicated throughout his life, he did not take any official positions
or, if he did, resigned not long after he took the position although he had
many opportunities to be in politics. He started his political career in 1678,
and moved to Minister of Culture when Western party were overthrown and Southern
party occupied the cabinet, then was promoted to one of the top 3 ministers
in the cabinet, without taking additional exam for promotion.
In 1678, although he was appointed an honorary position, he resigned shortly
after and returned to his hometown Yeoncheon dedicate to writing and education.
He was committed to research on School of Jae and the Confucian classics, learn
from Gu Jung, a student of Nammyeong Sik Jo. Especially, he was a master of
study of salutation, old studies, drawings, calligraphy, and writing.
After death of King Hyojong, debate over royal ceremony with Shiyeol Song,
a famous scholar among contemporaries, is well known. He received Munjung,
a poet¡¯s pen name after his death. Of his literature includes History of East,
Collection of works by Misu, Theory of Principle, and Collection of Salutation.
He was especially a master in writing in seal characters, and praised as the
best in the east, which can be shown in words on his tombstone and monument
for tide-calming in east coast in Samcheuk. Stone figure in his graveyard is
in black, which is unique for stone figures, with artistic sophistication.
