Soongeui Shrine Site
Local Academy is a local educational organization to perform services
for Confucian scholars and educate students in Chosun era. Yeoncheon
Local Academy is believed to be built in the spot 1 mile to the
east from local office of Yeoncheon-hyeon, in 1379(7 th year of
Taejo).
It was told that it was later moved to the north of the local office in 1658(9
th year of Hyojong). It was used as a training school and regular school during
Japanese regime, then the entire building was burnt during Korean War, however,
rebuilt in 1965, by the effort of local scholars. The reconstructed building
was also moved to the current Location in 1989 due to road construction.
Passing by the sign stone for getting off a horse and red gate, there are
3 outer gates, Myeongryundang, east and west wards of dormitories. Passing
through 3 inner gates, there is the main building of the academy, in which
great sanctuary for saints of Korea and China. Wooden panels of Confucius,
Anja, Jasa, Jeungja, and Mengja are placed within the sanctuary, and wooden
panels of 2 saints of Song dynasty, and 18 of Korea are also placed. Ceremony
to commemorate Confucius is held on his birthday(Aug 27 in lunar calendar)
every year, and service is held on the first and 15 th day every month in lunar
calendar.
