¡®Uleri¡¯ is an amusement in which all villagers gather to collect woods for
winter before harvest every year. When sun is setting, people make a palanquin
with extra woods, and carry an elder and return to the village to start the
amusement for harmony and peace of the villagers.
There is no written record on Uleri, however, it is believed
to be continued since it started in Goryo era considering its
using of words such as town representative or deputy delegate.
It was continued throughout mountainous region such as Jung-myeon,
Misan-myeon, and Shinseo-myeon in Yeoncheon-gun before the Independence
from Japanese regime, and stopped during historic turmoil such
as separation of north and south Korea and Korean War. The current
one is the one restored based on its original, discovered by
elders of Yuchon-li, Misan-myeon.
Although there are many group songs that are sung while farmers
work in the field, there are not many group songs for mountains
found except Uleri. Yeoncheon in Gyeonggi-do is the only place
to continue its heritage.
The overall structure of Uleri of Ami mountain is as followed
¨ç Play traditional folk music to set the mood.
¨è Depart to the mountain to gather woods, playing traditional folk music.
¨é On arrival on the mountain, workers are divided into 3 groups to cut woods,
and start the song of Uleri.
¨ê Before returning to the village, make a palanquin, carry an elder named ¡®a
governor¡¯ for this event, and sing ¡®the song of palanquin¡¯.
On the way down, dispute over the palanquin with other workers. When a governor
from team lost takes a bow to the governor of team won, all come down to the
village.
¨ë On arrival to the house of mountain owner, the governor has the guide tell
the owner that he will be staying to rest. Then an amusement takes place as
a post celebration and people sing ¡®a song of Dunggae¡¯.
All people in the event sing and dance to the traditional folk
music and songs until late at night.
